Trainspotting: The Musical in London in support of the Ibiza Calm Foundation
Contents
On 23 July, Ibiza Calm will be attending a special performance of Trainspotting: The Musical at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London in support of the Ibiza Calm Foundation.
The evening has been organised in support of the Foundation, bringing together theatre, conversation and fundraising to raise awareness of addiction whilst helping to support the Foundation’s ongoing work. It also offers an opportunity to experience one of the most well-known portrayals of addiction on stage, whilst contributing to initiatives that make education, understanding and recovery more accessible.
Supporting the Ibiza Calm Foundation
The Ibiza Calm Foundation has been set up to help make life-changing mental health and addiction treatment accessible to people who might otherwise be unable to afford it.
Whilst Ibiza Calm provides specialist residential treatment for individuals experiencing addiction and mental health difficulties, the Foundation raises funds to help remove financial barriers to care. By supporting individuals who would not otherwise have access to treatment, the Foundation aims to give more people the opportunity to begin their recovery journey and build healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Alongside funding treatment, the Foundation also seeks to increase understanding of mental health and addiction, challenge stigma, and support initiatives that encourage education, prevention and long term recovery.
Events such as this play an important role in helping the Foundation continue its work, with funds raised contributing directly towards supporting those in need of treatment and expanding access to life-changing care.
A shared commitment
This special performance is being supported by Paul Roberts, the main producer at Phil McIntyre Entertainments, the producers of Trainspotting: The Musical. Paul is a long-time friend of Ibiza Calm co-founder John McKeown and has been a valued supporter of Ibiza Calm for many years.
Their shared commitment to improving understanding of addiction and recovery has helped create an evening that brings together theatre and education in support of the Ibiza Calm Foundation.
The story behind Trainspotting: The Musical
Originally published in 1993, Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting became one of the defining novels of its generation before being adapted into the internationally acclaimed film and, more recently, a stage production in musical form.
The story explores heroin addiction, dependency, friendship, trauma and the choices that shape people’s lives. Whilst often darkly humorous and emotionally challenging, it does not romanticise addiction. Instead, it offers an unflinching portrayal of the complex impact that substance use can have on individuals, families and communities.
The title itself originates from a British slang term used at the time, referring to someone obsessively focused on a seemingly trivial or repetitive pastime. Irvine Welsh uses this idea as a metaphor for addiction: the repetitive, consuming and ultimately empty pursuit of the next high, where life gradually narrows until little remains beyond the cycle of craving and use.
It is this exploration of addiction, and its human consequences, that continues to make Trainspotting: The Musical a powerful and relevant production today.
Bringing lived experience and clinical understanding to the cast
As part of the production’s rehearsal process, Ibiza Calm co-founder John McKeown was invited to work with members of the cast, delivering a workshop on the realities of addiction.
Drawing on decades of professional experience supporting individuals and families affected by substance use disorders, John shared insight into how addiction develops, its effects on the brain, behaviour and relationships, and the complexities of recovery. The workshop offered performers a deeper understanding of the experiences behind the characters they portray, helping to inform their performances with greater authenticity and compassion.
