Am I codependent?

Diagnosis of addiction requires a thorough examination by a professional. However, below is a short self-assessment questionnaire as a first step to finding out whether you have the disease of addiction.

Here are some of the main features and characteristics of codependency presented as questions for you to answer:

1.Do you have an unhealthy dependency on your relationships?

    Please test yourself…

2.Do you say ‘Yes’ when you should be saying ‘No’, at cost to yourself?

3.Does your family have a history of addiction or psychiatric illness?

    Please test yourself…

4.Have you been in previous harmful relationships, putting up with behaviour that you shouldn’t?

18.Do you often lie awake watching your loved one sleep?

    Please test yourself…

If you’ve answered ‘Yes’ to five or more of these questions, you may fit into this category. Don’t put off seeking help. On the surface, it might not appear as harmful as a chemical or alcohol addiction problem, but being dependent on someone who constantly lets you down is bad for self-esteem and can lead to depression. Ask yourself if you’re happy with how you respond to your family, friends, and colleagues. If you are living with an addicted person and you are codependent, not only are you suffering but by continuing to tolerate their lies and excuses, you might not be helping the person that is ill. Children copy our behaviour, so if you’re a parent it’s important to seek help, look after yourself and put appropriate boundaries in place.
